Abstract
As preform size increases, the MCVD process rate is limited if all the cladding glass must be provided by the starting tube. Part of the cladding can be provided to a collapsed oversize core MCVD preform by particulate deposition, LMCVD,1 or rod and tube processes2,3 accomplished by lathe or furnace collapse techniques. This paper describes 1-D collapse models that were employed to maximize the process rates for lathe collapse and RT- MCVD.
