Abstract
For SiO2-GeO2 based fibers fabricated by vapor deposition techniques, the wavelength regions of low attenuation occur near 1300 and 1550 nm. With single-mode systems operating in the 1300-nm window becoming a commercial reality, research is under way to design and fabricate fibers that utilize the potentially lower loss possible in the 1550-nm window. These designs, with zero dispersion wavelength also shifted to the 1550-nm window, allow simultaneously low loss and low dispersion with conventional laser diodes.
