Impact of MEMS-based optical cross connect switching on optical amplifier transient response for automatically switched optical network applications

Abstract

This paper investigates optical switching characteristics of MEMS-based OXC and its impact on EDFA response, which are indispensable components in future automatically switched optical networks that require frequent and prompt optical switching in network nodes for on-demand optical path services. We show that significant optical power excursion due to EDFA transient response is caused by simple switching, and it is effectively suppressed by a precise switching control technique considering both MEMS mirror motion and EDFA response.
