Abstract
The use of aspherical mirrors has already been considered as a possible way to increase the mode volume of stable single-transversemode optical resonators. The previous investigations being mostly numerical, general conclusions were then difficult to draw. In contrast, we have recently described[1, 2] a systematic and powerful procedure to calculate the mirror profile corresponding to a specified output beam. The approach involves backward propagation and is somehow reminiscent of phase conjugation.
