Abstract
The densities in communication systems continue to grow rapidly. The performances at electrical interconnections face numerous challenges hence optical interconnection will be one major method to upgrade interconnect performance. To increase the data rate of the optical systems without increasing the number of channels it is necessary to increase the VCSEL bit rate. The perfect solution is a quantum-dot (QD) photonic-crystal (PhC) VCSEL. Its unique "endlessly single-mode" property enables reduction of the threshold current, an increase in emitted power in the single mode regime and very narrow spectral linewidth, which makes it an excellent candidate for application in high data rate networks.
