Abstract
In interferometric fibre optic sensor constructed using conventional low-bi fibres, random fluctuations in the state of the polarization (SOP) of the interfering beams give rise to variations in the output fringe visibility, and consequently fading of the interferometric signal. Kersey et al.1 have reported the first demonstration of a polarisationinsensitive fibre-optic Michelson interferometer (FOMI) based on a birefringence compensation technique using a Faraday rotator mirror (FRM) in the final end of each arm of the interferometer.
