Abstract
We report a novel optical system for detecting early-stage cancerous tissue in the upper Gastrointestinal Tract. This system uses a differential fluorescent signature to distinguish between healthy and cancerous tissue. The fluorescent marker used in this study is 5-aminolaevulinic acid which is metabolised at tissue level to produce protoporphyrin IX(PpIX). The absorption of PPIX peaks at 405nm, while its emission is characterised by a bimodal distribution predominantly at 630nm.
