Abstract
Creating a periodic array of micron size dielectric spheres with micron lattice constant in optical standing wave field is a promising method for fabricating photonic crystals, which was introduced by Bums et al. 4 years ago. They have successfully observed planar arrays of polystyrene sphere of 3.4 μm in diameter and the spaces between spheres were about 5 μm. Here we present the experimental studies on crystallization of polystyrene spheres in an optical standing wave matrix, similar to Bums, but the diameters of the spheres and lattice constant are reduced to submicron. This can lead to a realization of photonic crystal, which will be effective in a visible light range.
