Abstract
Continuous-wave lasing at 850 nm in Er:ZBLAN is difficult mainly because the long lived 4I13/2 manifold terminates the population inversion between 4S3/2 and 4I13/2. Pumping at 800 nm can solve this problem because exited-state absorption of the pump helps deplete the population in the 4I13/2 multiplet.1
