Abstract
The guided wave wavelength division multiplexers/demultiplexers play an important role in optical communication systems and sensor applications. We report the design and fabrication of extremely efficient 1.3–1.55-μm wavelength demultiplexers using symmetric directional couplers by Ag+-Na+ exchange in BK7 glass. Fiber device insertion losses below 1.5 dB and crosstalk of less than −30 dB are demonstrated for a device length of 25 mm. The projected insertion loss for the shortest length device is below 1 dB. Theoretical modeling based on the normal mode analysis of GRIN channel waveguides of the coupler shows excellent agreement with the experimental data.
