Abstract
Automatic gain or power control (AGC/APC) is preferred to ensure proper system operation when laser amplifiers are used in optical communication systems.1 The AGC/APC must compensate for the gain dependence on signal wavelength, polarization, input power, and amplifier temperature2 as well as device degradation. An APC based on transmission of a 10-kHz pilot tone has been demonstrated.3 A pilot tone may, however, not always be available, and here we report on the direct approach to AGC/APC requiring no pilot tone.
